About these products...

Paper-mache is used by many artisans because of its ability to withstand changes in atmospheric conditions and for its non-cracking texture. It is made from a composite of paper pieces reinforced and bound with adhesives like glue, starch, or linen oils and formed into boxes of different shapes and sizes. Each box is coated with layers of lacquer to prepare it for painting or decoupage. After it is painted it is once again lacquered 30 -40 more times and sanded and polished to bring out its colors and techniques. A quality box takes 3 or more months to complete.

The art of decoupage is a technique that is was used in the 18th Century to glue pieces of paper and pictures in combination with special painting effects - gold leaves and other art paintings - onto the surface of small boxes made from paper-mache. They were sealed with multiple coats 30 -40 times - with varnish that was sanded and polished to give the appearance of being painted or inlaid.
